Fully electric EQT is near production ready and adds a touch of class to Mercedes’ vans

Mercedes’ T-Class is a whole new vehicle segment for the brand. It takes the utilitarian V-Class and scales it down a little, adds an electric powertrain option, then tops it off with a classy interior and all the latest infotainment. Whilst the EQT is currently a concept, Mercedes is set to launch the car in 2022 in ICE and EV guise.

At 4945mm long, 1863mm wide and 1826mm tall, the EQT is similar in size to MPVs like the Citroën ë-Berlingo or Renault Kangoo. It actually shares the same CMF-B platform of the latter, enabling Mercedes to launch the T-Class with petrol and diesel engines, as well as in electric EQT guise. The Concept revealed by Mercedes has a longer wheelbase and seven seats, however, it is expected that a short wheelbase, five seat version will also be made available.

According to Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans: “(The T-Class) will appeal to families and all those private customers, whatever their age, who enjoy leisure activities and need a lot of space and maximum variability without forgoing comfort and style. The T-Class provides them with an attractive introduction into the world of Mercedes-Benz.”

Exterior design

The EQT Concept is instantly recognisable from the front as part of Mercedes’ EV family, sporting the black front panel and new style LED front headlights, which rake heavily rearwards. A panoramic roof with a starscape lasered into it will give the occupants a sense of space, whilst sliding doors on both sides combine with a vertical tailgate to make access very easy.

At the rear, the LED lights are also new and connected by an LED light strip – like the headlights at the front. Combined with the 21 inch wheels and high-gloss black finish on the concept, the EQT is a surprisingly good looking MPV which ties in well with Mercedes’ other forthcoming EQ-branded cars.

Interior design and features

Where the EQT is likely to stand out most is inside, providing Merc’s high levels of luxury in a flexible and potentially utilitarian package. On the concept, Mercedes is playing heavily on the interplay between black and white, with white nappa leather upholstery (some of which is recycled) with black panelling and high-gloss black details on some of the instrument surrounds. Mercedes’ EQ metallic blue is also featured on various trim.

Whilst we don’t have the exact specs, the Concept would seem to have normal dials supported by a central digital information panel for the driver. A central touchscreen interface is complemented by the multifunction steering wheel for controlling major vehicle functions, as well as an optional Mercedes voice assistant. EQ-specific functions are built into the infotainment system, operating navigation which optimises routes for maximum efficiency, as well as displaying available chargers nearby or on route. Mercedes’ latest generation MBUX infotainment system will be standard.

In terms of practicality, the rearmost two seats can be folded or removed completely when not in use to create additional space. The middle seats are split 60/40 and are easily accessed thanks to those twin sliding doors. In the boot, an integrated electric longboard sits flush with the load compartment floor and adds versatility.

Launch date

Mercedes is launching the T-Class in both ICE and EV guises in 2022. If you’re after a commercial variant of (effectively) the T-Class, the Citan will be launched later this year, including with an electric variant.
