Mitsubishi to power homes with its electric cars

Mar 13 2018 | by Louise Woodhams

While most car manufacturers are focussing on bringing their electric vehicles to market, or for those that have already, improving battery technology in order to extend the range of their cars, Mitsubishi are thinking about how to share energy between a home or an EV – depending on where it is required.

At the Geneva Motor Show this week, Mitsubishi unveiled its new Dendo Drive House (DDH) system comprising of the EV itself, a bi-directional charger, solar panels and home battery. In a nutshell the package allows owners to generate, store and supply energy automatically between their cars and home.

So, for example, customers can charge their EV/PHEV and domestic storage batteries at home using solar generated power, and then by using the bi-directional charger, supply power from their EV/PHEV to their home. Not only will it save on electricity costs, but it also means the electric car can act as an emergency power source in the event of a powercut to run appliances in the home.

This new energy ecosystem will be offered to customers this year at showrooms in Japan and Europe when they buy an EV/PHEV at MMC dealerships.
