Citroën e-C4 x Shine Plus 59kW 2023 review

Citroën e-C4 x Shine Plus 59kW 2023 review

Back in December 2020 we attended the launch of the new ë-C4 – Citroën's fifth electrified model to be announced that year by the brand, but the first zero emission car in their line-up. Fast forward to 2023 and they've already made some tweaks. Question is, is it still a family game changer three years on? What else is now available within this segment? We get behind the wheel of the x Shine Plus 59kW for a week to see what it’s like and how it compares to its rivals.

First impressions and what's changed since 2020 ë-C4?

The 2023 Citroën ë-C4 X hasn't just had a facelift, it’s got a new body style built on the same platform as the 2020 ë-C4. Where the 2020 car had a coupe-inspired crossover hatchback silhouette, the ë-C4 X stretches out into a saloon-style fastback with a longer rear overhang and a much larger 510 litre boot. Inside, the Shine Plus trim introduces Citroën’s latest HD 10" MyCitroën Drive Plus infotainment, improved voice control, and higher-grade materials like Alcantara Advanced Comfort seats. Safety and convenience tech has also been upgraded, with Highway Driver Assist (Level 2 semi-autonomous) now standard on Shine Plus. Under the skin, it retains the same 100 kW (134 bhp) motor and 50 kWh battery as the original – but minor software refinements and aerodynamic tweaks help deliver slightly improved real-world efficiency.

What are its rivals?

The ë-C4 X shares its e-CMP platform and drivetrain (50 kWh battery, 100 kW motor) with similar EVs like the Peugeot e‑2008, Vauxhall Mokka Electric, and DS 3 E‑Tense. Some larger or more performance-focused rivals include:

  • MG4 EV – A rear-wheel-drive hatchback from £26,995, offering sharper dynamics, longer range (up to 323 miles in the Extended Range version), and class-leading value.

  • Hyundai Kona Electric – Available in 48.4 kWh and 65.4 kWh versions, it delivers more range and faster charging speeds, with improved tech in the latest models.

  • Kia Niro EV – Similar size and boot space to the ë-C4 X, with more refined infotainment and up to 285 miles range.

  • Renault Megane E-Tech Electric – A newer EV with more upmarket cabin and sportier handling; pricing starts higher but offers a stronger tech experience.

Against these, the ë-C4 X stands out not for headline specs but for its exceptional comfort and distinctive fastback saloon styling, which is something not many EVs offer at this price point.

What’s unique about the Citroën ë-C4 X?

The ë-C4 X sets itself apart from it's rivals by doubling down on what Citroën has always done best: comfort. At the core of this is the brand’s Advanced Comfort suspension system, which uses progressive hydraulic cushions to smooth out potholes and speed bumps with remarkable comfort. The Advanced Comfort seats are fitted with extra-padding memory foam and a quilted design. In Shine Plus trim, they’re finished in Alcantara, giving long-distance journeys a lounge-like feel.

In the cabin there is also the option for a Smart Pad Support tablet holder embedded in the dashboard. This allows the front passenger to mount and safely use their own tablet for entertainment, while the driver can concentrate on driving. In the event of a collision the mount allows the tablet to remain securely in place while the airbag remains fully functioning

The boot is another standout, it offers a generous 510 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,360 litres with the rear seats folded. However, because it’s not a hatch, the aperture is narrower, which does make loading bulkier items more of a challenge despite the space on offer.

What about range?

Official range is rated at up to 222 miles, however independent cold-weather tests at approximately 5 °C saw 190–200miles. It supports 100 kW DC rapid charging: 10–80 % takes about 30 minutes and approximately 59 miles added in 10 minutes on a suitable charger. AC home (7.4 kW) recharge takes around 7½ hours.

How much do I need to budget?

The Citroën e-C4 x with Shine Plus trim starts at £34,995, placing it in the same ballpark as higher-trim versions of similar rivals. Running costs – insurance groups, servicing costs, and warranty cover, are largely the same as the standard ë-C4. However, the saloon-like styling and slightly less familiar badge appeal could affect resale strength, so it might lose value faster, particularly if you pay full retail.

So what are the positives?

First and foremost, the ë-C4 X delivers class-leading comfort on our weather-worn British roads. Between the plush seats, soft-touch materials, and supple suspension, it manages to isolate passengers from bumps and pot-holes. If your priorities lean toward calm and comfort over sharp handling, this is a real strength.

Citroën has also packed the Shine Plus trim with a generous amount of kit. Standouts include semi-autonomous Highway Driver Assist, heated front seats, premium upholstery, upgraded audio, and a wireless charging pad.

The ë-C4 X also delivers in terms of cabin practicality. There are 16 separate storage areas, including an underfloor boot compartment, and multiple hidden cubbies. It's a thoughtfully laid-out interior that doesn't feel short on places to stash everyday items.

Efficiency has also taken a step forward. While it uses the same 50 kWh battery as older EVs, like the Peugeot e-2008 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric, the ë-C4 X delivers more stable motorway efficiency, thanks in part to more refined software calibration and aerodynamic tweaks.

Okay, so what about the downsides?

As clever and spacious as the boot may be, the saloon-style rear lid is a limitation. Unlike the hatchback, the opening is narrower and the rear glass doesn’t lift, making it harder to load larger items like bikes or flat-pack furniture. It's a common trade-off in saloon EVs and one worth considering depending on your lifestyle.

The driving dynamics, while entirely competent, are unlikely to thrill. The steering is light, body roll is noticeable in corners, and there’s less engagement compared to more agile rivals like the MG4 or Hyundai Kona Electric.

Another sore point is the infotainment system. While the new 10-inch HD screen looks the part, the system can be slow to respond, lacks features like pinch-to-zoom on the sat-nav, and the reversing camera is prone to lagging.

Should I buy one?

If your priority is comfort over sport, spaciousness over agility, and you enjoy quirky French design with decent kit levels, the ë-C4 X Shine Plus is a compelling and well-rounded EV – especially at its price point. It undercuts Renault Zoë equivalents on price, offers smoother comfort than Kona or MG4, and feels refined in ride and presentation.

However, if you seek sharper driving dynamics or more responsive infotainment, rivals like the MG4 EV, Hyundai Kona Electric or Kia Niro EV may be better suited.
