296bhp Vauxhall Grandland GSe added to electrified performance range

Vauxhall has expanded its GSe model range with the addition of the Grandland GSe – a plug-in hybrid SUV with almost 300bhp. It joins the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer GSe as the first few cars in the electrified performance sub-brand.

Vauxhall’s GSe brand was launched earlier in October 2022 and offers “sports handling and looks combined with the performance and responsibility of electrified powertrains”, according to the brand’s MD. The third car to join the two Astra variants on offer has now been announced as the Grandland GSe with a powerful PHEV powertrain and more aggressive styling than the standard car.

The Vauxhall Grandland GSe is the most powerful car in the range so far, trumping the pair of Astras thanks to its more potent powertrain. In essence, it’s the same combination of a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor, but the Grandland GSe packs 296bhp compared to the 222bhp on offer in both Astras.

Performance is potent for what is otherwise a fairly middle-of-the-road mid-sized SUV. Thanks to permanent all-wheel-drive and that prodigious power, 0-62mph comes up in just 6.1 seconds and the car will top out at 146mph. In electric mode, the Grandland GSe will still exceed the national speed limit at 84mph. Official emissions and fuel consumption are 31-29g/km and 217.3mph respectively.

Like the other cars in the GSe range, Vauxhall has breathed on the Grandland’s steering and suspension to liven it up in the corners. Firmer springs and KONI frequency selective damping tech stiffens the car and provides more stability, whilst revised steering should add to the feel.

Styling-wise, the Grandland retains the new Vauxhall ‘Vizor’ front end but benefits from GSe styling cues. These include 19 inch alloys inspired by those on the Manta GSe concept, a new rear diffuser and the GSe emblem on the tailgate. At the front end, an optional black bonnet will also help distinguish the car. Inside, the new front sports seats are trimmed in Alcantara.

Vauxhall will put the Grandland GSe on sale in early 2023 with deliveries scheduled in the spring. Pricing and final specs will be released in due course.
